Audience for project

The audience I have intended to base the final looks for Mrs Havisham and Estella on are for a family based audience a lot like the BBC version of Charles Dickens tale great expectations. I feel this is a good audience to have the looks for as it means its something the whole family can sit and watch together. Anybody can watch this whether it be on there own or with the family, i feel this is good to have instead of it just being for a certain age, type or group. This is the main reason i wanted to make my looks and characters the way i have designed them so that it can be something that everyone could sit down enjoy and watch taking in dickens great story lines. When creating the looks i was looking at the now and the future and thinking about HD make -up and how it plays such a massive part in productions these days. HD make up is used by most programmes and films, meaning you have to consider  alot of different factors and make everything about your character look immaculate and perfect from the make-up to the hair and the styling. This is because with HD television it picks up everything even a piece of fluff or an eyelash on the face. When creating my final character looks i took this into consideration making sure i made everything as perfect as i could especially when it came to making Estella's skin look absolutely flawless.

Final images Miss Havisham

Above are a few of my final images from my shoot of Miss Havisham. I was happy with how my Mrs Havisham look turnt out and how the ageing looked. One thing I was disappointed with when looking back at the photographs is the images where she is holding the rose in her hands or where her hands are present i forgot to age the hand letting the photos quality down slightly.

Final Images for Estella

Above are a few of my favourite images from my final shoot for Estella. I feel this shoot went well and the overall styling turnt out how i planned and wanted. If i was to change anything about the look it would be the placement of the blusher as i feel this it to high fashion and prominent. I would also probably add slightly more volume within the styling of the hair as behind the lens it looked quite flat even though i was pleased with the actual overall style.

Final hair pictures for Estella's look

Here are some images of the hair from my final shoot of Estella. I took some pictures of the final hair style i created on my model so i could show diffrent angles of the hairstyle and the design. I wasent sure how the hair would look in my final pictures when photographed and if you would be able to see all the styling within the hair especially the bun and the plaits around the top of the bun as this was quite far back on the head. I was pleased with my end result of my final hair look for Estella and liked how the hair looked and refrenced in with her final look from my research and practises.

Final facechart and Hair design for Miss Havisham

Final Hair image from the shoot
Here is a image of the back of the hair style i done for my final look of Miss Havisham. I decided to go for a style similar to one i had practised previously with the hair being crimped and then placed as if up in a neat style which has gradually fell out over the years. I feel the hair turnt out well as an end result and looked messy, from the back the image doesn't look as if the hair has been dulled down all that much. I have placed fullers earth in the hair to tone down the blonde but i think this mainly showed within the front on the hair and where i had placed it on the roots.

Final Face chart for Miss Havisham
Final hair drawing for Miss Havisham look
To the left is my face chart for my final Miss Havisham look. I have scanned this face chart in and that is why it it quite bleached out. For my final look of Miss Havisham i had decide from researching what age i wanted to portray her character at which was between late 30's early 40's at the beginning of the book where she is still young but looks and seem older than she actually is due to the stress in her life. On knowing this i decided to add some faint wrinkles onto the face and make the eyes very tired looking and add red tones and dry spots on the skin. This is to show her dishevelment and the fact she does not look after herself or has moved from her wedding dress for years or been outside. With this i drew a quick sketch of the hair style i wanted my Miss Havisham to have which is to the left here. This sketch shows a pulled back hairstyle which is quite messy and fallen out alot like what i ended up doing my final hair look like.

My model for Miss Havisham

Here are some images of my model i will be using for the look of Miss Havisham. i decided to use this model as she has quite a pale complexion and also had very long blonde hair. I wanted blonde hair for my style as this colour hair is easy to dull down within pictures meaning i could make it look grey and dirty looking and the lenght was perfect as i wanted my Miss Havisham to have long hair where she wouldn't of cut it since the day of her meant to be wedding.

Clothing for Miss Havisham

When deciding on an outfit choice for Miss Havisham it wasn't an overly hard one for knowing what I had to dress her in but it was hard finding something that would reference or look similar to a wedding dress. I had previously looked at Victorian wedding's and real images of woman in the Victorian period getting married. These helped to show what sort of materials and styled dresses they would actually wear. I was firstly going to buy some white laced material that i could potentially style and wrap around my model and dye in tea or coffee so it had stains and was discoloured. I luckily found someone that had a very old and old styled wedding dress that they lent to me which is in the pictures below. On seeing this dress i knew it would be a perfect choice for my final look of Miss Havisham. The dress was quite old that it had a natural yellow tinge to it and a few marks and stains so i wouldn't need to dis colour it. The dress was made from lace and had pieces of velvet on it with buttons for pearls this made it feel as if it was an expensive dress which is perfect for my look as Miss Havisham would of had a high class dress. After knowing i had the dress I then had to figure out if i wanted a veil, i decided to make a veil using old lace material and then soaking this in tea bags so it matched the dress with an off white tinge.

hair design idea for Miss Havisham

I started looking at hairstyles within the Victorian period which I could style my model for Miss havishams hair similar to. These pictures I am looking at are referencing towards how Miss Havishams hair and how it could of looked like on the day of her wedding. I wanted to look at this so i could get an idea of how i could style her hair and have it falling out looking messy but still slightly in style. The two pictures i have got here show two completely different hairstyles within the Victorian period, with one showing an intricate hairstyle with a lot of volume and the other slightly flat allowing the veil to sit on it. When looking at a hairstyle i want to create for my final look i want it to be able to have a veil placed on to it in case i feel this is needed for the photographs. When looking at these hair ideas i will style and base my final design on a model with long hair as i want my Miss Havisham to have long unkempt hair to show that she no longer cares about her appearance, and also does not leave the house to get her hair cut meaning it would be long and in style slightly matted and messy from never taking it out and washing it.

Drawings

Here are two sketches i have done relating to Miss Havishams look. The sketch on the left relates to Mrs Havisham ageing i have done a quick quite old sketch of her here which is not the age i want to perceive her at but thought it would be interesting to create a sketch at this age to show that i have thought about diffrent age ranges for my end result. The sketch to the left is one i copied of an image of a wedding gown, this is to reference what Mrs Havisham always wears along with the veil and bouquet.

Influences for Miss Havisham

I researched into Victorian brides and pictures from weddings within the Victorian era. From doing this i was able to see how they styled themselves the kind of dresses they wore and also how they wore there hair and the accessories they had on there wedding day. I mostly looked at Victorian wedding dresses which a higher class lady would wear as Miss havisham was a higher class lady and would of had a beautiful dress for her wedding day that failed to happen. When looking at pictures of real woman from this time on there wedding day none of these woman smiled or looked happy which i found really strange but also interesting as to why. They all looked very proper and stern which is how i could imagine Miss Havisham being i feel i could link this in to my Miss Havishams mannerisms. After looking at wedding dress's I realised most woman in the Victorian era wore a veil when they got married this meant i had to consider possibly applying a veil to my Miss havisham and also designing her hairstyle around the veil so it had a place to sit on the head.

These are some images I found on the Internet relating to brides i thought they had a good link to Miss Havisham and her look, with there haunted and slightly scary/creepy look about them. These show another side I could go down and research further when creating Miss Havishams final look. I could make her scary and really ghostly like almost like a dead bride waiting for her long lost love instead of actually making her look alive and just tired etc. I Wouldn't make her look as horrible as the pictures below but i think these show a different side to Miss Havishams bridal side that i could go down and research possibly more for a specif audience of thrillers and for a more scary approach on the Charles Dickens tale.

Old age stipple and skin manipulation

image from the internet of dry skin
Practising manipulating the skin for the Character of Miss Havisham. This has to be done for Miss Havishams character as she is of an older age to Estella and has had a lot of distress within her life making her possibly look worse of for her age than she should. On the picture at the bottom is a test using Kryolans old age stipple on the face and drying it with a hairdryer this adds an aged effect to the face. I liked how the old age stipple added an effect to the skin it did add an aged effect around the eyes and also worked well with adding a dry effect to the skin also. After testing this I was able to determine how i could use this within my final look. I wasn't sure if i would use to old age stipple on my final look I would have to decide after deciding the age i wanted to perceive miss Havisham and how old i would need to make her look. When looking into potentially ageing the skin or adding an effect to it i looked into images of ageing and dry skin. This is so i could see real pictures to work from so my look can have a realistic ageing effect to it.

Final face chart and Hair for Estella

This is my final look for Estella the quality of the scanned in face chart i drew isent great. For my final look i have given Estella a white but flawless complexion to show her youth and beauty. With this i have keept the rest of the make up quite plain and natural alot like they would of worn there own make up in the victorian era as make up was seen as vulgar at this time. I wanted to have her with miminal make-up also as she is still quite a young character in this part of the story i have choosen Estella to be in her late teens. I wanted to show this desired effect threw her make up and complexion and wanted the base to be perfect in my final images showing youth and beauty with slightly blushed cheeks. For the eyes i would apply a small amount of neautral toned eyeshadow with a small amount of brown mascara on the lashes after curling them to give the eyes a sparkle and stand out. The lip colour I choose to use would be a very natural coloured pink almost as if shes bitten her lips and brought the colour to them keeping them looking very natural and fresh.

The hair design I have choose to use is similar to the one i practised previously with a bun at the bakc of the hair with curls around the neck. When looking at images of victorian womans hair this hair style stood out to me for estella it is elegant simple and youthful, a perfect style for her age and alows the make up to be seen with the hair pulled of the face. I knew the model i was using had mid lenght hair which was also perfect for the style as i wanted to have curls coming from the back falling onto the shoulders. I decided instead of having curls at the front of the head i decided to curl the hair and pin them up all along the front of the hairline. I would bun the back and then have curls at the back of the head falling onto the shoulders to finish the look of.

My Model for Estella.

Above is some images of my model i will be using for the look of Estella. I choose this model as she was petitie and had long dark brown hair perfect for the hairstyle for Estella and overal image.

Outfit choice for Estella

When coming to the outfit choice for Estella I had to think long and hard what I could style her in as styling plays a big part within my final Images and overall look. At first I was going to buy some material and make something for my model to wear for the final shoot but found this to be time consuming and also I would need a bit of money and some skills in making and putting an outfit together from scratch. I flicked threw photographs on the Internet looking at more different styles of dresses trying to figure out what i could style my model in that would be easy but effective for the final look.
Thinking back to my prom a few years ago i thought of the dresses we all wore then and started to look threw old prom pictures of me and my friends seeing if i could make refrences to the dresses we wore then and the dresses that they wore in the Victorian period. When looking at these i realised one of my friends dresses had a similar look and design and was a prefect and gorgeous colour to have my Estella in. All the other dresses were bright pink or red which were not really popular colours worn at this time where as light blues and olive green colours were more popular. The whole design of the dress from the colour to the high shine on it making it look very expensive and the detail along the top and down the dress made it look Victorian. This was my perfect option to dress my Estella in and as I already had a model choice who would fit perfectly in the small dress it was perfect. The low cut and style and design of the fabric along the top
of the dress was of a similar design to one of the dresses i had drawn and dresses i had see in books of Victorian woman wearing.

Sketch

Looking threw books in the library I was able to find alot of images referring to Victorian fashion. This is one of the images I came across within one of the books, I liked this image in refrence to Estellas look. I decided to sketch the look from the book as you would not be able to see it in great quality from the book. The style of the dress and the hair style are simialr to that of Estella and of a similar style i intended to use towards my final look for her.
This is a clip from the new film from Charles Dickens Great Expectations showing Miss Havisham and Estella together.

The relationship between pip, Estella and Miss Havisham from the Bbc version of Great Expectations.

Estella

Here is a picture clip from the new Great expectations film of Estella and Pip. I have used this clip as a refrence to her whole look within the clip. I wanted to refrence The Hair, Make up and time period of Estella, this is because this is the exact sort of time period i want to set my character of Estella in.

Sketch

Above is a sketch I drew. When looking at Victorian costume and fashion on the Internet I came across many images of Victorian styles dresses that were similar in reference to Estella's look and what she wears. This is one of the images I found and decided to sketch out as I wanted to include drawing's within my design's referencing this towards the extravagance of the clothing worn. Also I wanted my model for Estella to wear a dress similar to one like this for my final look with a lot of detail on the dress.

Influences

Alot of the influences towards my final designs of Estella came from researching into different Victorian looks and looking at real images and portraits at the time of the Victorian era. This helped me to gain correct knowledge of styling and looks at the time and also great photographic evidence. For Estella look I looked mainly at Wealthy Victorian woman as I knew this was Estella's background. When looking at wealthy Victorian woman I mainly looked at woman of a younger age as my Estella was not going to be an older lady but set within her late teen and there were also differences in looks between younger ages and older ages I had to consider. Within the Victorian times there were alot of differences between wealthy, middle class and poor people and this is why I had to research into the differences between them to make sure I had my Estella dressed and looking within the right social class. while looking at the photographs i was able to look at the different mannerisms that woman had within photos how they posed and if they smiled and looked happy or not to determine how I could pose my Estella also.

Estella Facecharts

This is a quick face chart i created for the look of Estella it isn't a very detailed face chart. I wanted to do a face chart referring back to the bruising on the face which i had previously done as a test for the look of Estella. I added a slight bit of grazing and bruising on the side of the face of the face chart to add to more than just the black eye. when looking back at this look with the bruising i decided not to go any further and run with it for a final look as i wanted to perceive Estella at a different time. i also felt that the beating of her husband played quite a small role in the book which wasn't so relevant to the end look and time period i wanted to have her in. The face chart has not come out very clear with my scanner and the paper of the face chart is a bit rubbish not allowing the colours to have there full pigment.

Here is a second face chart for Estella this is a face chart building up to a final look for my character. I had previously decided i wanted to set Estella within the book and the film at the point where she is in her late teens early 20s and when pip has just finished his black smiths apprenticeship and is called back to the house by Miss Havisham, and back into Estella's life again. This time in the book and film I think is an intense part because you as the audience are not sure of what is going to happen with pip being back in Estella's life. we also go from seeing Estella and both pip as young children to adults and its a big change which draws you further into the plot. With my face chart it didn't completely turn out how i wanted it to the eyebrows came out to strong i wanted them a lot softer as within the Victorian period as we know they didn't like to show they were wearing make up. Because Estella is still of such as young age i wanted to show the purity within her skin still and her underlining beauty. This face charts shows a natural eye with a hint of mascara and a light almost skin toned eyeshadow, also a light blush to the apples of the cheeks and slight pink/red pigment to the lips. This is the kind of make up look i want to go for with my final styling and look of Estella.

Estella Practise Make-up look

These are some Images of a Make- up look i created as a practise test shoot for Estella. I decided to do a practise look for Estealla so I could practise my base coverage on the face. Within the Victorian era the make up was very natural looking, they wanted to look like they were not wearing any make up when they actually were and this is the allusion i want to create on the face using the foundation. When i come to create my final look for Estella i know i want to shoot her in her late teens early twenties before she moves to London and when pip re enters her life again. The make up and base I want to look both fresh and glowing like a young beautiful woman would who comes from wealth at this time. I worked on my base with my model making sure I had matched the foundation colour perfectly creating a smooth base making the coulor of the skin seem naturaly lighter than usual. Wealthy victorian ladys had white toned skin at this time it was a desirarable look alot like the Elizabethan era but less durastic and more natural paleness. After working on my base i created a neutral look with the eyes and lighty colouring in the eyebrows to bring out the natural shape. I also added a light tone to the lips keeping them a natural colour.
